VERY CONCERNING IN CHILDREN
Acute emotional trauma, almost always unexpected, does not trigger neurosis in the individual because the symptoms usually appear gradually, emerging from a latent state. However, the destabilizing reaction after the acute «blow» is not the same for everyone in frequency, intensity, quantity, or quality; hence the concept of «neurotic personality,» with varying levels of predisposition, to be distinguished from that of «conditioned personality,» which also has unequal adaptive capacity.
The persistent, chronic «blow» («like a jackhammer») causes «hardening,» and the response manifests as a gradually established perversion of character, or as dysthymia (chronic depression), which is more frequent than a sudden neurotic episode.
